Climate Cover Up – a crusade to deny global warming

The first thing I noticed about the book was the intriguing picture on the cover. A man sitting in a boat in what looks as if its a lake that has all just been drained as he was rowing. The man has a puzzled look as if he has just woken up to this wasteland. As an Australian myself, such an image is something I could relate to. The once large expansions of wetlands and lakes of Australia are now nothing but cracked and dusty expansions of dirt. Surely, such a scenario is a problem related to the effects of global warming and the drying of the continent. But thats not what oil and coal companies want you to think!

Climate Cover up – a crusade to deny global warming is written by James Hoggan, an environmentalist and head of the David Suzuki foundation. The author doesn’t just explore the issue of the motives behind the denial of climate change, he covers the issue in detail. Hoggan names names, and organizations that have been manipulating governments and media avenues to exploit the public to help breed the idea that global warming is a myth, just as tobacco lobbyists attempted only a decade earlier.

Each chapter is clear in developing the message it seeks to get across and Hoggan uses excellent examples to illustrate his main points, bringing it back to reality.

I personally found the book a delight to read while at the same time very confronting as Hoggan exposes the shocking truths of the industries at work. Hoggan always cites reliable publications to re-enforce his strong argument points.  In my opinion, everybody should read this book, not only to learn about the climate change issue, but to also look into how the media functions and dis-functions to educate people around the world.

If anyone has a review of an interesting film or book that relates to the environment feel free to email me a copy and I can post it up.
